Empire Lawsuit after Lawsuit
Empire Lawsuit after Lawsuit
Time does not wait for anybody! It seems like it was just yesterday when Fox announced their new Empire TV series. 2014 is when it all officially began: On May 12, 2014 Empire was born. Less than two years later the series can't seem to stay out of trouble.
Empire lawsuits are becoming more-and-more common. Many of these lawsuits involve the creators of the Empire TV show. Lee Daniels compared Empire's Terrence Howard to actor's Marlon Bando and Sean Penn in a recent interview. Daniels was defending Howard who's been plagued by claims of physical abuse against women:
“That poor boy, ain’t done nothing different than Marlon Brando or Sean Penn, and all of a sudden he’s some fuckin’ demon,” the lawsuit quotes Daniels as saying. “That’s a sign of the time, of race, of where we are right now in America.”
Daniels was referring to Penn's marriage to Madonna which was plagued by stories of Penn's abuse. Madonna: Unauthorized describes Penn tying Madonna to a chair and beating her for hours.
Penn seeks $10 million in damages. The lawsuit explains that Penn will, “No longer tolerate the reckless and malicious behavior of others, who seek to aggrandize themselves or their projects at his expense.”
Lee Daniels net worth: $5 million, therefore the $10 million lawsuit is twice Lee Daniels net worth. Sean Penn is worth $150 million.
In February 2011, Terrence Howard's wife, Michelle Ghent filed for divorce. A judge granted Ghent a restraining order after she claimed that Howard caused her physical injuries that required medical attention. In December 2011, Terrence Howard's wife Michelle Ghent filed for a restraining order, legitimizing past claims of Terrence Howard's abuse against woman...?
April 2015
On April 15, 2015 in California, Robert Newt sued the Empire TV show, Fox Broadcasting, Lee Daniels, Terrence Howard, Danny Strong and Malcolm Spellman for copyright infrigement and plagiarism:
May 2015
About a month after the $1 billion lawsuit Empire's sued yet again. Sophia Eggleston sued Empire for $300 million in a copyright infringement suit. Eggleston says that she gave a memoir, 'The Hidden Hand' that described her early drug lifestyle to screenwriter Rita Miller who then pitched it to Lee Daniels leading to the creation of the Empire TV show, Fox's top program.
August
Empire sued by Empire? The real-life company, Empire Distribution sued the show over the name of the show claiming it negatively impacts its real life record brand.
Mid-August 2015
Marvin Gaye III plans to sue Fox, Lee Daniels and others over Empire, which Gaye claims was his idea. Gaye argues that he registered his show, 'Diamonds & Ballads' with the Writers Guild of America in 2010.
Gaye argues that Lee Daniels was pitched his treatment which was based on the families of both Gaye and Berry Gordy. Contrary to these reports, Gaye is not presently suing the Empire TV show, Lee Daniels and others. Gaye's lawyer, Paul Philips, explains that Gaye's interests currently remain focused on the Blurred Line case.
Late August 2015
Jon Astor-White is suing Executive Producers Lee Daniels and Danny Strong claiming that he shopped around his show, 'King Solomon' in 2007, which bears numerous similarities to 'Empire'. Astor-White is also suing Imagine Entertainment and 21st Century Fox.
Astor-White wanted Shaft in the lead role and he believes the creators of the show owe him $500 million for stealing his idea. Astor-White claims that his show starred Richard Roundtree since Shaft declined. The show was about a record executive who was battling his family over control of the company.
Astor-White's lawsuit is similar to Marvin Gaye III who may sue Empire for allegedly appropriating his ideas for a television show. Both Astor-White and Gaye allege that their shows had the "style and elegance of 'Dynasty' and 'The Sopranos' meets 'The Godfather'.
