Italy's top court to rule on Amanda Knox fate

The ruling out of Italy on Amanda Knox's conviction has been delayed by the Italian court.  According to TalkLeft, the Supreme Court in Italy will rule Friday on yet another appeal in the Amanda Knox case.  Many questions still remain: If she loses, will she be extradited? Will Italy file the request?

In Italy, if you speak against the prosecution, you can be prosecuted.
Amanda Knox claims that she was struck from behind by a police officer, she was denied food and water and police asked her to dream up what had happened.

For those of you who have not been following the case, in 2009, Amanda Knox grew up in West Seattle, WA and studied linguistics at the University of Washington,  In early 2007, Knox made the university's dean list, when she decided to move to Italy to study abroad.  She moved into a house that she shared with 3 other girls.  Her three roommates included two young Italian trainee lawyers and a British student named Meredith Kercher.

On November 1, 2007, Amanda claims that she slept over her boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito's house.
On November 2, a local woman takes two phones, that she finds in her garden, to the local police.  Between 11 pm and midnight, a witness claims to have heard a scream and a person running away from the house.  On November 2, 2007, when Knox arrived home, she noticed that something was wrong.  Kercher's door was locked and another roommate's room was turned upside down, a rock was on the floor and the window was broken.

Meredith's door was locked, and once the door was broken down, Meredith's body was covered by a blanket with blood everywhere.  Meredith was stabbed and sexually assaulted.  As the crime scene was processed, Amanda's behavior was abnormal.  Amanda and Raffaele kiss and hug while forensic teams investigate.  Forensic teams immediately notice that the break-in appears to be staged.  Amanda and Raffaele are seen laughing and they do not attend Meredith's visual.

As the days passed, the interrogations became longer and more intense.  Without a lawyer, Amanda continued to talk to the police.  Knox's mother says that she should have gotten her a lawyer immediately.

On November 5, 2007, after reviewing Amanda's phone, police ask her about text messages from her manager, Patrick Lumumba.  She sends him a message that reads, "See you later."  Amanda is unable to continue lying and she confesses that she was home that night with her boyfriend and Lumumba.  She says that she brought Lumumba to the house because he was attracted to Meredith.  Knox claims that she was in the kitchen when she heard Meredith scream.

When the DNA is processed, it's not any of their suspects.
Lumumba was thrown into jail for two weeks, causing members of the African community to protest.  Lumumba is given an alibi and he is freed.  Knox admits that she lied about Patrick Lumumba's presence at the house.

Rudy Guede
Police find the thumb prints of Rudy Guede of the Ivory Coast.  He is a known petty criminal.  His DNA is found in Meredith's body.  Guede has fled the country and is arrested in Germany.  Guede claims that he was in the bathroom when Meredith was murdered.  He claims that he was in the bathroom.  He says that Meredith invited him over, and Meredith explained to Guede that Amanda had stolen money from him.  He went to the bathroom, and then heard Meredith scream and ran out.  He came up against a male figure that cut his hand and then screamed, "Black man found, black man condemned" and ran away.  He says that he attempted to help her, but the bleeding did not stop.  Rudy Guede is found guilty and sentenced to 30 years.

Foxy Knoxy
The prosecution claims that Meredith was murdered in a sex game gone wrong.  Many have criticized the media for failing to describe the case accurately and dispassionately as they believe it could influence the court.  The Italian media refer to Amanda Knox as 'Foxy Knoxy' and portray her as a devil with an angel's face.  In 2009, there were 11 Facebook pages dedicated to her, all in Italian.

In court papers, prosecutors state that Sollecito held Kercher by her wrists while Knox poked at her with a knife and Guedo sexually assaulted her.

Convictions Overturned
On June 29, 2011, the DNA evidence used in the prosecution of Knox and Sollecito is deemed unreliable by an independent report requested by Italy's appeals court.  On October 3, 2011, the murder conviction is overturned and Knox returns to the USA, nearly four years after the arrest.  In 2013, Italy's highest criminal court orders a retrial of Knox and Sollecito.

In 2014, an Italian court convicts Knox and her Italian boyfriend.  Knox was in Seattle when the conviction occurred.  Knox has stated that she will not voluntarily return to Italy while Sollecito remains in the country.  We now wait for the Italian court to rule on whether to uphold the latest verdict.
